Prairies and dry open places, especially on banks and hillsides; now very rare as a native plant in Michigan. The genus is predominantly one of prairies and grasslands and only this species ranges into Michigan as a native plant.

Seeds are now commonly incorporated into “prairie” seed mixes, and occurrences beyond the known range (as in Schoolcraft Co.) and in disturbed sites are likely introductions.
