This is a calciphile, growing along marly springs, in cold streams through cedar swamps, on calcareous shores, and in associated ditches.
This is usually a prostrate, mat-forming species, although shoots may be ± erect from decumbent bases. The flowering season begins in June and can run into October. Our plants belong to var. jamesii (Benth.) A. Gray.
