Melampyrum lineare Desr.
Common Name: COW-WHEAT
Coefficient of Conservatism: 6
Coefficient of Wetness: 3
Wetness Index: FACU
Physiognomy: Nt A-Forb

Wet and dry forests (deciduous or coniferous) and peatlands, favoring drier and only moderately shaded sites but ranging from bare rock cliffs to wet fens.

Surely one of our most abundant and ubiquitous plants, especially in the northern part of the state, and quite variable in habitat morphology – perhaps warranting more study. The leaves vary from as narrowly linear as those of Agalinis to ovate, often with some narrow teeth toward the base of bracteal leaves (subtending flowers). The corolla is whitish, both lips tipped with yellow. The fruit is strongly flattened laterally and sharply pointed. This species has been documented in Michigan as parasitizing roots and rhizomes of many herbaceous and woody species (even perhaps on Sphagnum).
