Rock crevices, ledges, openings, open forests, and sandy banks near Lake Superior. Essentially an eastern North American subarctic species, ranging from Newfoundland to Great Bear Lake, south into New England and the Lake Superior area, where it grows locally in Ontario, Michigan, and Cook Co. Minnesota.
