A cultivated species from the Old World. Collected in Wayne Co. in 1912 and then not again until along the beach at Ogontz Bay in Delta Co. in 1987 (D. Henson 2318A, MICH). Still very uncommon in Michigan, but more frequent eastward.

A coarse plant, bushy in aspect, with the flowers in a large leafy panicle; the dark borders on the calyx lobes are distinctive.
