Fens (but sometimes in deep sphagnum), cedar swamps (often in the wettest places, such as hollows and trails), wet alder or tamarack swamps, old interdunal swales.

This circumpolar species is the only one in the genus. The 5-merous heterostylous flowers have white corollas with prominent hairs on the lobes. They bloom in spring. The large trifoliolate leaves are pale, the leaflets with entire margins, and are easily recognized.
