This familiar species is presumably Eurasian in origin and may have arisen long ago in cultivation as an allotetraploid derived from M. ×rotundifolia and selected for glabrousness. Escaped to roadsides, banks, shores, thickets, fields, and disturbed ground; in moist or dry sites, but only occasionally along streams. First collected in 1860 in Washtenaw Co.
