A plant of Asian origin, whose seeds yield the licorice-like flavor of anise-seed and oil, widely used in many beverages, baked goods, candies, drugs, and other products. It rarely escapes from cultivation to disturbed grounds, and was collected by O. A. Farwell at Detroit (Wayne Co.) in 1894.
