Wet, often marly ground: fens, beaches, stony and often marshy shores, interdunal pools and flats, sandy swales and ditches; occasionally in bogs and along trails in conifer swamps; sometimes in shallow water, with culms over 5 dm long, although normally they are much shorter. Commonly, the yellow achenes of E. elliptica persist after the scales are shed, making it easily recognized late in the season.
