Phyllostachys

This is the only true bamboo to be collected in Michigan to date, though the common name bamboo is applied to other plants (most notably Fallopia japonica in the Polygonaceae). Hardy, temperate bamboos are a feature of the eastern Asian temperate flora, and other genera from there are sometimes cultivated. While rarely truly escaped, many bamboos are aggressive vegetative spreaders, and may be very persistent after cultivation. A fertile collection of what appears to be Pleioblastus variegatus has been collected as an escape in Essex Co., Ontario.
